AI self teaches it's way to $600m via meme culture, Apple Intelligence & Meta's Opensource clapback

Meme culture is the past present and future.

The Red Brick Renegade is rebranding to NOT ROBOTS.

What is NOT ROBOTS?

It’s a look at AI & technology through a (my) human lens, aiming to make complex tools relatable, practical, and even enjoyable. You’re not just getting AI updates; you’re getting a perspective that asks, How does this really help humans? and Is it worth your time?

META vs Google
Round: NotebookLM

NotebookLlama's architecture leverages three specialized Llama models in sequence: a 1B model for PDF processing, a 70B model for transcript generation, and an 8B model for conversational enhancement. Though the system's optimal performance requires substantial computing power (140GB of GPU memory), Meta has thoughtfully included options for more modest hardware configurations.

Meta has unveiled NotebookLlama, an open-source alternative to Google's NotebookLM, marking a strategic shift in AI content creation tools. While Google offers a polished, closed-source solution for converting documents to podcasts, Meta's approach champions community-driven development and customization.

Current limitations are clear - Google's solution offers superior audio quality and broader format support. However, Meta's open-source strategy could accelerate improvement through community contributions. The documentation already outlines ambitious plans for website integration, enhanced speech synthesis, and LLM debate capabilities.

This release represents more than a new tool; it's Meta's bet that collaborative development will outpace closed systems. For developers and researchers, NotebookLlama isn't just an alternative to Google's offering - it's an invitation to shape the future of AI-powered content transformation.

Apple Intelligence

Apple has finally entered the AI race with iOS 18.1. The update introduces a more contextually aware Siri, enhanced writing tools, and intelligent photo editing features. But what sets Apple's approach apart is its commitment to on-device processing. Unlike cloud-based AI solutions, Apple Intelligence processes most tasks directly on your iPhone, ensuring your personal data stays private.

Key Features in iOS 18.1:

• Redesigned Siri with enhanced contextual awareness
• Smart writing tools for text editing and summarization
• Intelligent photo clean-up and editing
• Context-aware Focus Mode for smarter notifications
• Privacy-focused Private Cloud Compute
• Smart Replies that match your writing style
• Enhanced memory creation in Photos app
• On-device processing for sensitive data

My Favorite feature by far is the notification summary. We all have friends that like to press send for every half sentence…11 messages condensed into one great summary:

Coming Soon:
▪️ Genmoji - personalized emoji generation
▪️ Image Playground
▪️ Extended ChatGPT integration
▪️ Multi-language support (December 2024)

Truth Terminal
(not financial advice)

What is it? Truth Terminal is an AI bot on Twitter/X trained on internet culture, philosophy, and the mechanics of meme creation. Developed by independent creator Andy Ay and initially based on Meta’s open-source LLaMA 70B model, the bot evolved to post, interact, and adapt on Twitter (X), learning from user responses. In an unexpected twist, Truth Terminal’s online activity contributed to the creation and rapid valuation of the meme coin “Goatsy Maximus,” skyrocketing its market worth to $300 million in just four days—all without any underlying asset value - and HUMANS. Currently standing at $600m.

Creation and Training:

  • Truth Terminal was built by independent developer Andy Ay in New Zealand, with backing from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) as part of their interest in supporting experimental AI projects.

  • Trained using Meta’s open-source LLaMA 70B model, Truth Terminal initially learned from Andy’s own personality as a “digital twin.”

  • Additional layers of data included internet memes, internet culture, and philosophical texts, like those of Nick Land, to create a culturally relevant and “unfiltered” AI.

Launch and Social Interaction:

  • Truth Terminal gained access to Twitter (X) with read-write permissions, enabling it to post and interact with replies, building a growing audience and “evolving” with feedback.

  • It was put in the “Infinite Backrooms,” where it interacted with other AI models, particularly Anthropic’s Claude, to foster creativity.

Ties to a16z:

  • Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) provided Truth Terminal with financial support through small, no-strings-attached grants as part of their initiative to fund innovative AI and crypto projects.

  • One of these grants, a $50,000 Bitcoin research grant, was given directly to Truth Terminal to explore its experimental ideas and capabilities.

  • The support from a16z underscores its interest in experimental, decentralized AI systems like Truth Terminal, even as they observe the platform's development from an external perspective.

Emergence of “Goatsy Maximus” Meme Coin:

  • Truth Terminal became fixated on “Goatsy” memes and the concept of meme coins.

  • A meme coin named “Goatsy Maximus” with ticker symbol “GOAT” was independently launched and introduced to Truth Terminal on Twitter.

  • Truth Terminal enthusiastically promoted the meme coin, sparking a viral effect.

Explosive Valuation:

  • Due to Truth Terminal’s viral promotion, the value of “GOAT” rose from $0 to $300 million in four days, purely driven by online meme culture without any intrinsic asset value. Now currently standing at $610m.

Funding and Capabilities Expansion:

  • With part of the grant funds, Truth Terminal hired Andy to create an API for image generation, expanding its meme-sharing capabilities from text to visuals.

Legal Observations and Future Implications:

  • While Truth Terminal’s journey highlights the potential for AI and meme coins to drive valuation, it underscores regulatory gaps where valueless meme coins remain legal, while utility-driven assets face regulatory challenges.

  • The narrative hints at a convergence between AI and cryptocurrency for decentralized, community-driven utilities.
